Mythology and history
In Greek myth, Capricornus represents Pan, the goat-legged god who leapt into the Nile to escape the monster Typhon, turning his lower half into a fish.
Pan and Typhon
When the monster Typhon stormed Olympus, the gods fled in disguise. Pan jumped into the Nile, and the part of him above water became a goat while the submerged half became a fish. Zeus placed this hybrid figure among the stars. Some traditions instead identify Capricornus with Amalthea, the goat who nursed the infant Zeus.
Babylonian roots
Babylonian astronomers recorded a goat-fish figure in this region as early as 2000 BC, associated with the god Ea, who brought civilisation and wisdom from the sea.
